LISBON IN

LISBON IN ONE DAY

Lisbon in One Day
A Private Tour that covers the
best things to do in Lisbon

The Lisbon in One Day experience is a 6 hour private guided walking tour that covers the best things to do in Lisbon. From the bohemian streets of Bairro Alto to the cosmopolitan squares of the Downtown Lisbon, from the narrow streets and alleys of ancient Alfama to the World Heritage Sites of Belém. The tour will provide you an insiders’ look at the very best of Lisbon while showing you the main highlights, letting you absorb the city’s atmosphere and charm. We will have a lunch break at Time Out Market Lisbon, a food hall located in the Mercado da Ribeira at Cais do Sodré.  There are plenty of things to do in Lisbon so our Take Lisboa expert guides selected the unmissable sites do visit in Lisbon in One Day. We will start your Lisbon in One Day afternoon tour in the Afonso de Albuquerque's Garden.  Belém is the Age of Discoveries district, where caravels departed to explore new frontiers and continents. Belém is also home to the original pastel de nata or custard tart where they’ve been made since 1837. Yes, we will taste a pastel de Belém during this part of the Lisbon in One Day tour in case you’re wondering. A couple of Portugal’s seven wonders are right here, the Jerónimos Monastery and the Tower of Belém.  The Jerónimos Monastery’s construction was ordered by King Manuel I in 1502 to celebrate Vasco da Gama's discovery of the maritime path to India. It was built on the site of a small chapel founded by his uncle, Henry the Navigator and it is where Vasco da Gama and his crew spent their last night in Portugal in prayer before leaving for India. Inside the Jerónimos Monastery you will be able to explore the two-story cloister and appreciate the highly ornate architecture. You’ll also be able to see the church from above and visit the tomb of Portugal’s greatest writer of 20th century, Fernando Pessoa. We will continue our day strolling alongside the Tagus River bank until we arrive at the Tower of Belém, one of Portugal’s most famous monuments. The Tower of Belém is divided into the bastion and the four-story tower and it is a fine example of the Late Gothic Manueline style. There is no better way to end the morning of our One Day in Lisbon tour. Originally the Tower of Belém was built to protect Lisbon from incoming raids. But the fort was also a last familiar sight for the Portuguese navigators upon their departure. Just before lunch we will take a short tram or train ride to our destination Time Out Market. Here your expert guide will give you great tips to try local dishes. We will start the afternoon at the center of Chiado, Lisbon’s cultural center and enter the quincentennial Bairro Alto where our guide will share with you the history of this very charismatic district. Bairro Alto, where olives grew five centuries ago, where Fado was sung for sailors and artists, where most Lisbon’s newspapers were printed, where nightlife after the dictatorship emerged. Exiting Bairro Alto, we will enjoy the magnificent view of Lisbon at Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, from the top of the hill all the way to the Tagus River. This ample, landscaped garden offers what is arguably one of the best views of Lisbon. We will then continue to the Carmo Convent and Church to talk about revolutions before climbing to the top of the Elevador de Santa Justa to admire a 360º degree view of the city. Downtown Lisbon will be our next stop and the central theme here will be the great earthquake of 1755 and the Marquis of Pombal’s innovative reconstruction plan. Crossing Downtown Lisbon we will start to climb towards Lisbon Cathedral and then one of Lisbon’s most sought after viewpoint, the Miradouro de Santa Luzia. No Lisbon in One Day tour could miss this treasure of the city. The One Day in Lisbon tour is an extensive introduction of central Lisbon, its history, culture and architecture, the Portuguese calçada, the colored azulejos, its hidden alleys and monumental plazas, its memorable monuments. Lisbon weather makes it perfect to walk the streets of the city. A private walking tour, set at your preferred pace, is the best possible way to feel the city. Your expert guide will be with at all times sharing his passion for Lisbon and doing his best for you to enjoy Lisbon in a fun and informative way.
